No More Martyrs is pleased to present the 2019 Minority Mental Health Awareness Summit in recognition of
Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
African-American, Latino, Asian, LGBT and Native American speakers have been invited to share their perspectives on what it means to provide culturally responsive care and services.
This special event will take place at the
on July 18, 2019 with pre-summit training available on July 17th.

About the Summit
The Minority Mental Health Awareness Summit is a unique national event that focuses on the importance of cultural competence in mental health care and advocacy. The summit is open to the public and scheduled for July 12, 2018. CEU credits are available for attending the Summit as well as through pre-summit training offered on July 11, 2018.

Who Should Attend
This event focuses on collaborative conversations about improving quality of mental care and dismantling stigma for minority populations. Target audiences include licensed mental health counselors, university students with interest in mental health, non-profit professionals, social workers, nurses, educators, consumers (and loved ones), mental health advocates, community health organizers and religious leaders.

Thanks to the generosity of the Jefferson County Public Health Advised Fund and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, need-based scholarships are available to individuals living or providing services to clients in Jefferson County (Alabama). Three types of scholarships are available:
(Scholarship 1) Need-based scholarships are available for mental health service providers who provide services to clients in Jefferson County (Alabama) to attend Pre-Summit Training for the Minority Mental Health Awareness Summit. Service providers include, but are not limited to, counselors, psychologists, therapist, nurses, social workers, peer support specialists, pastoral counselors, psychiatrists, etc. To Apply, please CLICK HERE.
(Scholarship 2) Need-based scholarships are available for mental health consumers (those living with mental health concerns) and caregivers to individuals with mental health concerns who live in Jefferson County (Alabama) to attend the Minority Mental Health Awareness Summit. (Scholarship 3) Need-based scholarships are available for service oriented professionals who provide services to clients in Jefferson County (Alabama) to Youth Mental Health First Aid Training on July 11, 2018. Service oriented professionals include, but are not limited to teachers, law enforcement, clergy, social worker, etc. To Apply, please CLICK HERE.
Mental Health First Aid Training
Mental Health First Aid Training will be offered as a Pre-Summit Training on July 11, 2018. Mental Health First Aid is an 8 hour public education program that teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents.

Becoming A LGBTQ Competent Mental Health Professional (Instructor: Justyn Smith, MS, LPC)
Dr. Carlos P. Hipolito-Delgado is our opening keynote speaker. He serves as Associate Professor in Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver. He is co-editor of the counseling text Elements of Culture in Counseling. His research interests include the ethnic identity development of Chicanas/os and Latinas/os, the effects of internalized racism on communities of color, training to improve the cultural competence of counselors, and the sociopolitical development of students of color. He has received research grants from the American Educational Research Association, the Spencer Foundation, and the Hewlett Foundation to study the sociopolitical development and civic engagement of students. Dr. Hipolito-Delgado is currently leading a team investigating factors that impact the recruitment and retention of students of color in counselor education.
Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans is Professor and Chair of the Department of African American Studies, Africana Women's Studies, and History (AWH) at Clark Atlanta University (CAU). Her research interest in "creative survival" includes work on health, education, spirituality, and music. She has authored and co-edited numerous books, including Black Women in the Ivory Tower, 1850-1954: An Intellectual History (2007), Black Women's Mental Health: Balancing Strength and Vulnerability (SUNY Press, 2017), and Black Women and Social Justice Education (SUNY, 2019). Her work on mental health and wellness are practical outgrowths of her research on Black women’s intellectual history.
Dr. Mimi Khúc is a writer, scholar, and teacher of things unwell. Her research interests include race and mental health, queer of color feminist critique, religion and magic, and Asian American motherhood. She is an adjunct professor of Asian American studies, American studies, religious studies, and women+gender studies, and the managing editor of The Asian American Literary Review, a DC-based arts nonprofit. She is the guest editor of the recently published Open in Emergency: A Special issue on Asian American Mental Health, an arts and humanities intervention that works to rethink and decolonize Asian American un/wellness.

Expand Your Visit to Alabama
Join No More Martyrs as we culminate this year's summit with a visit on Friday, July 13, 2018 to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church located in Birmingham, Alabama as well as the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. During this trip, conversations regarding racial trauma and mental health will be led by mental health advocates and licensed mental health professionals.
Tickets are $55 (plus $5.12 processing fee). Price includes:
